Abstract:

English for Integrated Studies (EIS) Approach is an innovative strategic school curriculum development that improves students' communicative English competency, thinking skills and public mindedness. It gives an opportunity for Non English Speaking Teachers (NEST) to develop EIS teaching-learning processes unto their potential via on the job training using role playing with the reinforcement of the school’s principal leadership in instructional and curriculum development.
After completing an in depth study in the 4 selected high schools that implemented the EIS approach in at least 3 academic years in Thailand, we found that the students' basic desirable characteristics, especially the English second language communication skills, thinking skills and public mindedness, were improved. This is a reflection of the principals' automatically encouraging, supporting, and establishing and extended network to develop the EIS approach in the learning process. It is important to note that Principals are the key to success. This approach focuses on the phenomenon of making the attempt by the intended teachers to develop their teaching methodology to unleash the students' potentials with continuity, engagement and moral and ethical values encouragement through the usual classroom teaching process and consistent follow up of their lesson outcomes. Also occurring is continuous self learning development through integrated learning via computer technology and contextual local wisdom resources by both students and teachers.
