EIU via 6 Tips EIS Educational Model

EIU via 6 Tips EIS Educational Model

The purpose of EIU want to educate of the international understanding for the world peace living with all humans and environment "with in" and "between" the nations. The school is as accumulative wisdom transfer to the young generation through school curriculum. If all instructors of schools who are the implementer of theirs curriculum engage the conceptual EIU with in theirs mind through theirs actual job in the active classroom teaching, then the results of EIU's expectation could be success.
Because of the EIS concepts have been success from the integrating English as the commutative language through the acting lesson procedure by the instructors. So then the 6 tips EIS educational Model was generated from the implemented EIS project. The 6 Tips' strategy are engaging the students skill from classroom sharing, dialog and discussion of theirs instruction, emphasis on students' self study to construct knowledge from theirs skills. These are the highlight point of EIU was participated in every classroom lesson planning.
The EIS Association, Thailand was conducted on the 28th December, 2010, from the principals and core teachers that implementing the EIS approach through their school curricula, its ultimate goal to improve the quality of education in the 2nd decade Thailand educational revolution (2011 -2020). Now the 6 Tips Model was extended through the EIS school Network in Maths – Sciece- Computer EIS teaching technique Training. It’s basic training course for Non-English Speaking Teachers (NEST) to improve the communicative English through classroom SixTipS Approach. Six Tips for Constructionism Teaching-Learning Design Consideration

When designing constructionistic teaching-learning activities for each period, teachers should:
1.Identify clear ultimate goals or learning outcomes for each period
2.Design all activities effectively according to students’ prior knowledge and background. Furthermore, the activities must gear students towards various types of self-study or group and peer activities leading to the ultimate teaching-learning goals.
3.Encourage students in all teaching-learning procedures to acquire more skills specified in the EIS OK Model, i.e. Observation, Comparison, Classification, Transferring and Inferring by using simple WH and Yes/No question to stimulate students to use and develop basic scientific skills.
4.Engage and provide opportunities for students to communicate, explore, demonstrate and share their activities in step 2 and what they have learned as in step 3 above with their classmates as much as possible.
5.Summarize, comment and/or guide students, in the closure and extension step, through what students have presented or experienced in step 4 in order to align the learning experiences and new knowledge with the ultimate goals or expected learning outcomes.
6.Evaluate the learning results by considering students’ learning behaviors and their learning outcomes by using a clear Rubric Assessment criteria as well as providing various assignments according to learners’ backgrounds.

OK MODEL LEARNING
PROCUDURE:
BACK TO THE
BASICS

Humanity's ability to learn stems from a natural intuition, an intuition that is not different from animals; and the development of observational skills was born from the need to continually process and embed new information.
Reference: Observing Knowledge (OK) Model is a model designed to perceive knowledge from the basic scientific learning skills, which are naturally learned skills of human beings.
OK model is composed of the following 5 steps.
1. Observation is the act of noticing or paying attention to any material thing or action using the different senses of an individual. Observation can also be done by using some observational tools, which helps human beings undergo a keen observation to a certain specimens to be used in further scientific studies.
2. Comparison is the act of perceiving resemblances and contrasts, similarities and differences of a certain thing or act or can use such as basic measurements or basic calculators or calculating.
3. Classification is the grouping together of different material things or acts with resemblances or similarities or of the results of using the basic measurements or basic calculators or calculating.
4. Transferring (from previous knowledge) is the application of skill learned in one situation to a different but similar situation.
5. Inferring (to generate knowledge) is the act of drawing conclusion through reasons from gathered facts and evidences of the step 1-4 above.

The OK model can conclusion as the facts which were gained observation will then be use to compare and classify using their similarities and differences and /or resemblances and contrasts, then be transfer to similar situation before drawing conclusion through inferring method.

The followings three stages of OK model can be applied for human learning follow from theirs development.

The Effectiveness of Thailand Bilingual Education through English for Integrated Studies (EIS)

The Effectiveness of Thailand Bilingual Education through English for Integrated Studies (EIS)
Surapong Ngamsom
EIS Association Thailand President
January, 14, 2012

1.     How did EIS get started? Let’s look at its history.
English for Integrated Studies, known as EIS, came into being at Sunthonphu Pittaya Secondary School at the beginning of academic year 2004.  We started the program because we saw that students could learn English easily. Because that we have been background and experienced Thailand English Program (EP) more than 6 academic years.  With the EP programs most students could learn English quite well, but there was not a level of consistency and quality for all the foreign teachers. They would then leave and the English was not supported.  Also, EIS is available to all students from all income levels, not just for the students who could afford the EP programs.  EIS has grown dramatically in the past few years with EIS, now in use in over 100 schools.
2.     What is the basic theory and concept of EIS?
EIS is an educational program that teaches core courses in English for the two levels of secondary education, and has a few pilot programs for primary education. Courses in science, computer technology, mathematics, and English are taught by Thai teachers, using English. The teachers are trained to become skilled in English to transfer knowledge in both English and their subject matters.  Developing the skill of learning through the observing knowledge (OK) process, increases the ability to master English.
3.     Why should EIS be implemented ?
In other school programs teaching English in Thailand, the students learn English separately and their other courses in Thai.  Many do not retain their English skills because they do not use them in other studies. With EIS, English is integrated into the entire learning process allowing for greater ease of use of English for all academic pursuits.
4.     Let’s discuss how EIS it working in the schools.
EIS has been fully endorsed by the Ministry of Education and the Office of Basic Education as it follows the core Sufficiency Economics Philosophy (SEP) concept, adopting the principles of Reasonableness, Moderation, and Self-Immunity.
Students are responding to the Thai Master Teachers instructing in English with understanding and greater willingness to use English.
5.     Here are some indications of the effectiveness of EIS.
Students in the EIS programs are scoring in national tests, such as the NT score and (O-Net score), for data from 2006-2008 at levels equal to Thai renowned schools. This applies to all subjects taught including Mathematics, Science, English, Thai and social subjects.  EIS also outperformed other bilingual programs with higher readiness.
6.     How has EIS grown in Thailand?
Let’s discuss how the network has grown.
EIS started in academic year 2004 in the Rayong Province. It grew slowly from 2006-2008, supported by Rayong Provincial Administrative Organization, but with steady improvements.  In 2009 there were 25 secondary schools using EIS; it 2010 it grew to a strong 120 schools!  Many of you are here today!  We expect to have 500 schools in the academic year 2011!
7.     Why does EIS serve as an effective policy strategy to improve educational quality for both students and teachers?
EIS has a proven 6-year track record because it works on the English SSF model, “Short, Simple, and Familiar”. The key is integrating English into the entire curriculum, developing the OK model skills of observing, comparing, classifying, transferring, and inferring through instructing Science-Math subject matters.  As the instructors use English, it enables both students and teachers to “think in English.” Students grow in confidence in both Thai and English and are better prepared for the changing world where English is an important element for Thai society as it prepares for the ASEAN summit over the next five years.

Students' Desirable Characteristic Development through EIS Strategic School Principal Leadership in Curriculum Development

Students' Desirable Characteristic Development through EIS Strategic School Principal Leadership in Curriculum Development

By: Surapong Ngamsom, Mr., Principal of Mathayom Wat Niairong High School, President, EIS Association of Thailand, Pirat Monwiset, Mr., Principal of RenunakornPhitaya High School and Patima Poonsap, Miss, Principal of Nawaminthrachinutid Truimudomsuksapattanakarn High School, Thailand

Abstract:

English for Integrated Studies (EIS) Approach is an innovative strategic school curriculum development that improves students' communicative English competency, thinking skills and public mindedness. It gives an opportunity for Non English Speaking Teachers (NEST) to develop EIS teaching-learning processes unto their potential via on the job training using role playing with the reinforcement of the school’s principal leadership in instructional and curriculum development.
After completing an in depth study in the 4 selected high schools that implemented the EIS approach in at least 3 academic years in Thailand, we found that the students' basic desirable characteristics, especially the English second language communication skills, thinking skills and public mindedness, were improved. This is a reflection of the principals' automatically encouraging, supporting, and establishing and extended network to develop the EIS approach in the learning process. It is important to note that Principals are the key to success. This approach focuses on the phenomenon of making the attempt by the intended teachers to develop their teaching methodology to unleash the students' potentials with continuity, engagement and moral and ethical values encouragement through the usual classroom teaching process and consistent follow up of their lesson outcomes. Also occurring is continuous self learning development through integrated learning via computer technology and contextual local wisdom resources by both students and teachers.

OK Model: EIS approach

OK Model; Learning Procedure, Back to the Basics

  1. OK Model: Basic Learning Procedure

  6. OK Model; Cyclical Learning

  1. Adult/Experiential Learning Process; Applied OK Model

Knowles Malcolm S & Kolb, David A

Classroom English for EIS project

Classroom English

Why should we use classroom English?

  1. Using English as much as possible in your classes, will emphasis to your learners that the English lesson or others lesson (in English) is very different from any other lesson in the school day. It will help to maintain a good English speaking atmosphere.
  2. If you give them instruction, ask questions, and make comments in English, the learners will have to listen carefully to what you say all the time. This will keep them thinking in English.
  3. It is important, from early stages of learning, to avoid translation as much as possible and make the learners think in that language.
  4. Feelings of success and confidence will help your learners overcome the difficulties in learning a foreign language or a second language. If you keep using the same instructions questions and comments, even the weaker learners will begin to understand – and this will help their confidence too.

How much classroom English should we use?

You know that beginners and young learners will not understand you if you say every thing in English. If they don't understand your instruction, they won't know what to do and they will become confused and stressed.
So, too much English too quickly may be bad for the learners' confidence and for the way they learn. But if translate all the classroom English you use, this will also be bad. For example, you give instruction "Take out your book, please". Then you translate it into your own language. Then you say, "Open your books at page twenty-nine, please" and again you translate. Very quickly, the learners may stop listening to the English because they know you will give a translation. In this way, you may create lazy learners.
You should aim to use English for all simple instructions, questions and comments.
In addition, I would like to suggest for recognition on the principle teaching a foreign language is using SSF model: S-Simple, S-Short, and
F- Familiar
and learning process as basic science learning skill such as,
observing, comparison, classification, transferring and inferring. In these ways will help the learners more English confidence.

The following activities (1-12) are classroom English that often using in your class.
